His strong background in taking emerging technologies to market assists in the quick transformation of initial ideas into successful Internet product and service offerings. Russ works closely with clients on market segment mapping and analysis, business model development, competitive analysis, product positioning, and product marketing.

Russ is one of the industry pioneers in commercial use of Internet technologies. He has strongly supported the International World Wide Web Conference through contributed papers and his participation on industry panels and program committees. He is also a long-time supporter of CommerceNet where he served for two years as an elected representative on the Member Advisory Committee.

Russ established Digital Equipment Corporation's Internet Program Office in 1992 to jump-start the corporation's aggressive use of the Internet as a business tool. In addition to developing the cross-functional Internet strategy for Digital, he led the development of Digital's corporate website in 1993 - the first commercial website from a Fortune 500 company. As site number 493, this website opened the door for the commercialization of the web, which now has over 28,000,000 sites.

As an early thought leader in business use of the Internet, he pioneered many online marketing techniques now used throughout the industry. He describes the lessons learned from this experience in The Internet Strategy Handbook: Lessons from the New Business Frontier. This compilation is available from Harvard Business School Press (1996).

Russ is also the co-author of Managing Internet Information Services which was published in 1994 by O'Reilly & Associates. This first-of-its-kind book describes use of the Internet from a content provider point-of-view. With over 100,000 copies in circulation, this best-selling book was translated into three languages and taught first-generation webmasters all over the world the nuts and bolts of website design and administration. Based upon the success of this book, the University of California asked Russ to develop and instruct their first Web Architecture and Fundamentals course offering.

Russ helped launch the Internet advertising industry on October 1st, 1993 when he placed the first paid, commercial banner ad on the Internet. Subsequently he has lectured throughout the world on online advertising, Internet business models, online marketing techniques, and commerce technology. He holds a B.S. in Computer Science from Purdue University and has over 20 years of industry experience.
